Kate and Harry Attend Anzac Day Service at Westminster Abbey

The Duchess of Cambridge attended the annual Anzac Day service of commemoration and thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.

With Baby Sussex due any day now, Prince Harry made a last-minute decision to attend. A royal source told the Daily Mail: "The Duke is pleased he can attend today's Service, as planned. With their baby due, his name was not printed in the programme in case he was unable to do so." Harry and Meghan toured Australia and New Zealand last October, it was fitting for the prince to be there today.

Photos of Kate and Harry interacting have always been a joy to see. It was a treat to see them together today, especially for an incredibly important service.

I'm sure Harry is counting down the minutes at this point. I'm reminded of how protective he was of his sister-in-law when she was expecting George. During an interview he said: "I just only hope that she and him - but mainly Catherine - hopefully that she gets the necessary protection to allow her as a mother-to-be to enjoy the privacy that comes with it."

An arrival video.

This year marks the 104th anniversary of the landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25th April 1915.

At Gallipoli, Australian and New Zealand forces fought for the first time under a united command as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or more famously the ANZACs. The Gallipoli campaign exacted a heavy toll on both sides. Some 50,000 Allied troops from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France, Canada, Newfoundland and India lost their lives. Including those wounded or evacuated for sickness, the total number of Allied casualties number around 250,000. The Turkish forces lost over 86,000 in addition to those wounded.

The Palace added: "Anzac Day has been commemorated in London since the first anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli in 1916, when King George V attended a service at Westminster Abbey and more than 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. Since then, Anzac Day has become an important moment to recognise the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who died during the landings, and to honour the sacrifices of men and women in all wars. Anzac Day is commemorated as a public holiday in both countries with memorial ceremonies held at various locations."

Westminster Abbey unearthed a powerful piece of audio featuring Australian Dr Agnes Bennett, who treated the wounded from Gallipoli. Dr Bennett attended the first Anzac Day service in London in 1916. She recalled: "I was privileged to be there and felt that no greater honour could be done to our men. There were few dry eyes. The ANZACs had indeed graduated as citizens of Empire." Click here to listen to the audio.

Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance for Australia and New Zealand. It is commemorated as a public holiday in both countries with memorial ceremonies held at various locations.

The royals were greeted by the Dean of Westminster.

The Duke of Gloucester was also in attendance.

He is Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Australian Army Education Corps and Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps.

Guests included The High Commissioner for Australia, George Brandis, the Deputy High Commissioner for New Zealand, David Evans, the Turkish Ambassador, Ümit Yalçın, members of the Armed Forces from Australian, New Zealand, Turkey and the United Kingdom, and young citizens of Australia and New Zealand.

The Dean of Westminster gave The Bidding with New Zealand in mind: "The spirit of national pride encourages us, as we bring to mind in particular the recent terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand. We pray for an end to terror and for the triumph of peace."

The flags of Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Turkey were presented at the High Altar.

David Evans, Deputy High Commissioner for New Zealand read St John 20: 19-23: 'Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.'

The London Māori Choir sang How Great Thou Art.

Afterwards, Kate met guests and representatives.

A very nice moment captured.

The Duchess departing.

In 2014, the Cambridges marked Anzac Day in Australia on the final day of their tour.

Meanwhile, Prince William marked Anzac Day by laying a wreath of behalf of the Queen at the War Memorial Museum in Auckland, New Zealand.

William is spending two days in the country following the Christchurch tragedy. Fifty people lost their lives during two consecutive terrorist shootings at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch. The ages of those killed ranged from 2 to 71. An additional fifty people were injured. William has been meeting with families, victims and first responders, telling them; "you did an incredible job on a very bad day". He has accompanied Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on several events including the Anzac Day service, the PM has shown tremendous leadership.

The Duchess looked regal in a custom teal Catherine Walker coatdress for the service. Laura notes the garment is based on the Amber Coatdress which features "A clever diagonal fastening of dimpled gold buttons adds further interest to this sharp peacock blue coatdress." It's a classic Walker silhouette and very much in keeping with Kate's favoured styles for similar occasions.

The Duchess wore the Rosie Olivia Varick Hat (with thanks to Laura). The almond shaped hat with curled pheasant trim retails for £440.

The talented milliner studied at Central St Martins in London before completing internships with Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones. There's a special royal connection linked to her success; Rosie received funding to set up her own business from The Prince's Trust, which has been a cornerstone of Charles' work since 1976.

Kate injected a touch of emerald green into the look with her Emmy London Rebecca pumps and a matching clutch.

And accessorised with her Kiki McDonough Blue Topaz and Diamond Drop Earrings in White Gold. The £3,500 pair are blue topaz oval and cushion cut stones surrounded by diamonds set in 18ct white gold.

The Duchess wore the matching £1400 Kiki Eden Blue Topaz and 18ct White Gold Flower Necklace.

In other news, the Palace has announced upcoming May engagements for the Duchess.

1 May - The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, will officially open the new Centre of Excellence at Rodney Street, London N1, on Wednesday 1st May. Her Royal Highness will also visit Pears Family School in its new building and meet with children and their families participating in a music class.

One week later, Wednesday, 8 May, it's a return to Anglesey.

8 May - William and Kate will firstly visit Caernarfon Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter Base. Until 2015, search and rescue operated out of RAF Valley on Anglesey, where the Duke worked as an RAF search and rescue pilot between 2010-2013. Their Royal Highnesses will view the Coastguard’s new Sikorsky S92 helicopters, and meet members of the search and rescue team, many of whom previously worked alongside the Duke at RAF Valley. The Duke and Duchess will then join a discussion with crewmembers about the mental health challenges that result from working as first responders. From Caernarfon, Their Royal Highnesses will travel to Anglesey to visit Halen Môn Anglesey Sea Salt, a thriving local business which has been operating for over two decades and which won the Queen’s Award for Sustainability in 2017.

It was a beautifully conducted service as always.

Nice to see Kate and Harry mark this event. And very fun to see Kate being the most senior royal at an event like this! Or is she... I seem to remember that she only is in the company of William but that might be one of those things that was in the past but not anymore? Either way, very fun!

What an elegant look. Perfect church look. I really like the neckline and the colour. I also like the matching but not really accessories! Very nice!

    1. In the church they are seated in order of precedence. Harry, Duke of Gloucester and then Kate. If William was there Kate would have preceded both of them. The idiosyncrasies of royal precedence.

But it does feel like the first time where Kate has attended this type of event on her own, in a way representing William, just another step in her royal road.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. So they still follow that. Makes sense within that royal universe.

It really feels like a big thing.

    1. The hat, it's beautiful but why oh why do we need more coat dresses? If Kate loves the same style of outfit then why does she need more and more... Of the same outfit?! You're too beautiful to be so regimented Kate... Branch out and wear something different!

      Delete
    2. That is who Kate is, conservative dresser and someone who stick to tried and tested. I doubt we will ever see her in anything but a coat dress at a commemorative service like this. It is not a fashion show after all.

      Delete
    3. I understand your point of view, Fiona. I sort of agree with the regimented aspect; however, I also like a signature look (even if I don't particularly like the person's choices--Iris Apfel--comes to mind). But were Kate to step outside her box in any noticeable way, an Anzac service probably wouldn't be the occasion to do so.

My theory--and pure speculation on my part as we never know what another person's motives are--is that she very likely stays in that box for several reasons:

      1. Aristocrats are particularly good at putting "the butler back in his box" (if you remember that scene from Downton Abbey). As an outsider to the upper echelons of British society, I would imagine her to be aware of that. In spite of her rank, many would be happy to sneer just a little, even if not openly.

      2. She's likely modelling her wardrobe on the Queen's. Baring some dreadful event, Kate will be Queen Consort one day, and the bar of expectations has been set at a certain level for decades now.

      3. She probably likes a standard look that particularly suits her. I don't know about anyone else but I tend to do the same with my wardrobe choices. I merely have to re-wear items more frequently than she does--my timeless wool & cashmere coat I've worn since the 1990s for one. I'd have something like that one in every colour if I could. Heck, I'd probably even have two closets full of blue ones in her place.

      Delete
    4. Honest question, what else do you expect her to wear to something like this? I feel like it's totally appropriate.

      Delete
    5. Thats just her style plus this is a very serious event not a fashion runway. I understand some people want her to be more daring with her style but at the end of the day its her choice on what she wants to wear.

Love Kate in a lovely flattering coat dress. she is very appropriately dressed, great accessories, I rather like the hat, she looks immaculate. it ifs not broke, why mess with it??

I Agree 100% RachelZA - Anzac day is NOT a fashion show.

    9. Fiona, I get what your saying, Kate is young, beautiful and has a model figure, so it seems a pity that she choses the same look all the time. She could wear anything but I also get that this is her job and role in life. She obviously feels comfortable with a certain look and feels it’s appropriate for formal occasions. Its actually an unusual look, the coat dress, I can’t think of anyone else wearing them except maybe mother of the brides. I think this is the issue, they are a little bit matronly . This obviously doesn’t bother Kate , she dresses like her Mum in a classic, elegant way. She doesn’t do edgy fashion. Sinead

  4. How lovely to see Kate mark such an important event on her own (well, sort of)... as in without William. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing William and Kate together but given the fact that he's in NZ this ANZAC day, it certainly is wonderful to see Kate undertake attending this service even while he's away.

Also, Kate looks simply stunning today :)

  5. Oh my heart leapt with joy seeing those two together today! ❤❤❤ Although the issues are reported to be mainly between William and Harry I still love seeing those two together. Like a brother and sister. :)

Thinking of Australia and New Zealand today - might be a particularly emotional Anzac Day for New Zealand considering how much they've been through recently.

Always love how the British honor the military. ❤

I like the hat and the feathers from certain angles, just not from the front. Would have loved to see Kate wear a hat similar to the one on the model, LOVE that style. Above all else, love how all three of them honored the Anzac day, very fitting. cc

Isn't this just fascinating, CeCe! "One man's meat is another man's poison" :) only I like the clutch as such, just not the colour mixture. I'm not fond of blue and green together, with the exception of anything "peacock" which I love. This particular green is not my favourite - I suppose it's just the personal taste, those slight and subtle differences which are unique for every person. But I think that most of us who like this look made a similar "wowww!" sound when we saw her.😀

They both look so happy in each other’s company. Hard to believe there’s animosity between Harry and William... not that it would necessarily carry over into Harry’s and Kate’s relationship but one might think they wouldn’t appear to be so easy with each other if things were truly that bad. My husband is having a strained relationship with his sister right now and I’m finding it difficult to feel the same way about her as I did before even though I try to see issues from both of their perspectives. I just can’t be as comfortable with her as before. Hopefully the interpretation of the brothers’ relationship in the media is exaggerated.

  30. Love the coat dress and hat, and am relieved to see her with Harry. With all the rumors swirling about tension between the brothers I have a hunch Kate might be the peacemaker.

A few quibbles: the teal color is so strong that when I went to the kensington royal page I was surprised she paired them with olive green shoes. I think teal is one of those colors where you either have to pair it with another teal (and I have teal shoes in my outfit just for that purpose!) or a neutral. Otherwise the two clash. I also notice that Kate appears to be wearing a lot of bronzer. Too much, in my opinion. It doesn't look natural.

But that coat and hat are to die for.

  31. It is wonderful and refreshing to see Harry and Kate together at this important service. They are brother and sister (if only by law) and I think Kate has been a positive support for Harry too.
As far as William and Harry are concerned, I think it is important to remember that they are human and like any siblings, their relationship will have growing edges. This is normal and they need to be allowed to work through anything privately, without the press and social media stirring up things and picking apart every interaction. There are many challenges when we put people on a pedestal and set them apart from ordinary society, because we lose sight of their humanity. To be honest, this is one reason that I really struggle and do not agree with the institution of monarchy. To set a royal family apart automatically pitches them as somehow "better than" or "superior to" all ordinary citizens. And with that comes this exceedingly high expectation that they will somehow be above common human challenges and difficulties. Couple that with the press seizing on any opportunity to report (whether truthfully, salaciously, or falsely) on difficulties and it creates a storm and a mess. I wish William and Harry would be given space. They do not deserve to have their relationship picked apart, and the fact that it is being done so for profit and monetary gain is despicable.
It is also important to remember that William and Harry are no longer those teenage boys walking behind their mother's funeral cortege. They are men with families and that development alone brings natural peaks and valleys to any sibling relationship. William and Harry are very different too, and those differences can create changes within relationships. While William wanted to take his time in his relationship with Kate, and make sure that marriage was going to be the right thing for both of them, Harry had a different experience with Meghan. He knew (and she knew) immediately that this was something special and things moved quickly. That doesn't mean that one approach is right or wrong; it is just how each brother is naturally programmed. Both were deeply affected by their parents' separation and divorce, and it is apparent to me that they have learned a great deal from that experience. I am delighted and grateful that they have found the loves of their life and now have families of their own. William and Harry have been through so much together and I believe that they can work through any challenges between them. They just need to be given the respect, privacy, and space to do so.

    1. Well said, Sarah NC. Every family relationship has ups and downs and periods of redifinition after big changes like marriage and children naturally follow. It’s just such a shame that the media (and many on social media, who have been awful to all four of them!) can’t give them the space and privacy to able to do their public jobs well and sort through their personal relationship with the space and time needed.

So good to see Kate at the service today as well as Harry. Kate looked lovely, and the honor and respect paid to those who gave all for freedom to live is beautiful. Thank you, Charlotte, for including William’s activities in New Zealand as well. A solemn day of tribute all around.

    3. Pam from Boston26 April 2019 at 15:16

Sarah, for this family, it's more than a matter of a personal approach to relationship. They have to make sure that the person they are marrying is going to be able to handle the responsibilities and the intense media attention that will come along with the marriage. They have to make sure the marriage is right for the monarchy and not just themselves. Not very romantic but it's to protect all of them. I don't know how old you are, but I am "mature" enough to remember very well when both Diana and Sarah Ferguson weren't able to cope with their situations and what a horrible time, to say the least, it was for the Royal family and the individuals involved. Daily stories in the tabloids about the breakdown of their marriages, "squidgygate," the toe-sucking scandal, the hounding of Princess Diana. Even before her marriage broke down, Sarah had to endure criticism and insults, like being called the "Duchess of Pork" because of her weight. That's a hard thing to take and it's almost no wonder she buckled under the pressure. The two brothers need to make sure that the women they marry can withstand all of that and I'm sure that was what was at the heart of William's advice to Harry to not rush into anything with Meghan.

      Delete
    4. So Pam, is that why William took 10 years to marry Katherine?

      Delete
    5. Pam from Boston26 April 2019 at 19:34

I think it was actually eight years that they were together from the start of the relationship to the wedding, but yes, it was one of the reasons - that and wanting to get his military training done before he settled down to marriage. He wanted to give Kate lots of time to see what being a part of his family would be like, to understand the pressures, enough time so she would be sure she was ready. He said in the engagement interview that he was trying to learn from lessons in the past.

      Delete
    6. Meghan has life experience and in my opinion grit. The learning curve and adjustment is huge I'm sure, but I think she is more than equipped to handle the "fishbowl". When you get to a certain age, there's no need for some to have a long long relationship to figure things out.You already know yourself well and what will work and what won't.

Yes, I believe Harry and Meghan knew she was the right person and that it would work, but of course it's only natural that William, not knowing Meghan, would have concerns at first. Anyway, I think whatever problems there might be between the two brothers probably doesn't have much to do with that conversation at this point, because they seemed ok with each other at the wedding. Other issues must have come up between them since then.

I couldn't agree more, Becca! Well said! Her ability to be so natural in both roles - a mum who loves playing with her kids (and not only with her own ones!) as well as a dignified representative of the RF - is a real gift. She has learnt a lot. I was so proud of her today!

  38. Kate outfit today is lovely, elegant and very classy with a very interesting hat, color of jewelry perfect. It looks a little daring to wear green pumps & clutch to take off the slight green in the feathers, but a leather light blue teal pump & clutch would have up lifted the beautiful outfit. Another possibility is her Alexander McQueen lighter navy suede pumps and Anya Hindmarch Blue Leather Mararo Box clutch would have been a another choice because as you can see the gloves in same color blue compliment the outfit. She looks fabulous. 💙

  39. Thank you for the post, Charlotte. Along with everyone else on this blog, delighted to see Kate and Harry together and displaying their usual camraderie. Kate looks beautiful and regal. I think this is a signature look for her on such occasions. Remember last year, when Harry and Meghan were scheduled to attend, and William, unexpectedly showed up? Kate had just given birth to Louis, and William famously almost fell asleep during the service. This year, Harry, not quite a new father yet, but Meghan due to give birth any day. Because Meghan is about to give birth, there seem to be parallels between Kate last year pregnant with Louis, and Meghan pregnant with Baby Sussex one year later.

  40. Wonderful to see Harry and Kate together enjoying a laugh. Their facial expressions reminded me of old times and good friends. Both the neck and shoulder line of kate's coat is so flattering on her as is the color. I'm sure the helicopter is on standby at the palace to carry Harry back to Windsor immediately following the services today.

When we travel for pleasure/work related etc. I have never believed in purchasing souvenir trinkets. I always told our children that the trip itself is the memory. However, with that said, a lovely fashion accessory from another country not available to us in the states never fell into that category. lol

    3. I like the way you think USA Granny!! lol :) No I'm actually just taking a break from packing/organizing the home & family before I leave. So who knows what will be going on while I'm over there???? Meetings etc are stacking up so I won't know until things unfold once in London if I'll be able to make it up to Windsor or not. I may not have a day just to myself, but still hoping!! I'll be in touch if anything exciting happens while I'm there!! :) xx Actually, btw I noticed Kate has that event on May 1? Charlotte do you know the time she is set to arrive? I was thinking perhaps if there is time before my meetings start, I could maybe get over there & try to see her?

I have a question: when there is an engagement like today, and the Queen is not present, what does protocol in the RF dictate as to who walks in first, etc? Just curious. Who would be considered the senior most royal at that point or are they all equal when the Queen isn't there?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I should say : Harry first (son of the heir and prince of blood) then Kate, wife of the heir of the heir and princess by mariage), then Richard, Duke of Gloucester (cousin of The Queen)

      Delete
    2. In this case it was Harry - DoG - Kate. If William had been there it would have been William - Kate - Harry -DoG. Kate's status in very formal occasions like these change when she's with William and without him at events. So because William was not there, she had lower precedence than the blood royals but if he had been there she would have been higher. Oh, the intricacies of royalty!

    4. They did not stick to strict protocol when walking in, but the did sit according to precedence.
Harry being the most senior, after him, the Duke of Gloucester and then Kate. Because they are the blood royals and Kate is royal by marriage.

If William was there it would be William, Kate, Harry, DoG.

If Meghan was there it would be Harry, Meghan, DoG, Kate.

If neither William nor Harry was there it would be DoG, Kate, Meghan.

An interesting question would be if Eugenie was there, where would she fit in.
      Harry, Eugenie, DoG, Kate?

      Delete
    5. Tammy, it appears to me that the original plan was that the Queen's cousin, the Duke of Gloucester , was meant to escort Kate in William's absence and also as a representative of HM in Prince Charles's and William's absence. That would explain the Duchess of Gloucester 's not accompanying the Duke. I am so accustomed to her being at his side it seemed strange to see him alone. The explanation is he was not meant to be by himself; he was to have been with Kate .Harry would ordinarily take precedence over Prince Richard in order of succession; however, in family events I have noted that Anne or Andrew as well as the cousins sometimes are put forward over the younger royal's who are higher in the succession.
I think the unexpected appearance was somewhat more complicated this year than it was last year. More variables.

      Delete
    6. As we saw, Harry was the most Senior Royal of the blood (within the order of succession) & thus walked in last with the Dean of Westminster, while The Duke of Glouster is next, followed by Kate as Princess William, wife of a Prince of the blood. These 2 walked in together ahead of Harry.

      Delete
    7. There is a strict protocol based on proximity to the throne. Kate gets her seniority from William's position and only when he is present so she was the junior royal. Harry was the most senior present, being 6th in line, then the Duke of Gloucester and finally Kate. Had William been present, he and Kate would have sat together at the head of the group. Had Charles been there as well he would have sat ahead of William.

    11. So, basically, Catherine has no rank when appearing amongst other royal's and without her husband? However, Phillip was given preference when he appeared without his wife, even with Charles or Anne. I believe Camilla is given preference over royals other than HM when she appears without her husband. I think there must be more involved than royal blood and spouse's rank.

      Delete
    12. It really is that simple, but when you get to the level of Prince Consort & Princess of Wales (Camilla's proper title) you're on a different level even on their own!

      Delete
    13. I just saw that the Duke of Gloucester represented the Queen and presided over the earlier ceremony at the Cenotaph. I really do think he was meant to continue that role during the church service. Otherwise, why was Harry not the presiding royal at the Cenotaph as well? My thinking is that Prince Richard not only plays a key role with both Australia and New Zealand beyond making tours, but also is due for the honor and recognition he was obviously meant to receive.
Seeing him walking behind Harry just seemed strange to me. I think I would probably have felt the same way if William had lead the procession during the same circumstances. With the Queen, Prince Phillip, Charles, and William absent, not to mention Anne, Andrew, and Edward, it would have been a chance to give one of the loyal but aging cousins a moment in the sun. When will that combination of circumstances ever come again for him? Harry will have many such moments in his expanding Commonwealth role. There may never be another such a "Goldilocks" moment for Richard.
Of course, with Harry's unexpected appearance, the whole set-up was altered.
I believe the planned procession order is usually included in the programme. I wonder what it said?
The Queen changed the precedence order for non-blood-royal spouses before Charles and Camilla married. Before that, Catherine would have retained WIlliam's place when not accompanied by him. The irony is I can't see that the change in protocol has affected Camilla's place when appearing without her husband. Or Phillip's. Can you imagine him meekly following behind Harry?
Technically speaking, precedence is what the Queen says it is.

The new coatdress is just okay. I've seen better, but I've also seen worse. I appreciate that Kate mixed colors in matching the shoes with the clutch and feathers in her hat, though it does look odd at a glance. I must be in the minority with her hat- I really dislike it. Too many feathers, the placement is odd and it makes her look like a bird. I can't believe it costs as much as it does. Looking forward to seeing Kate again next week.

  47. Like everyone else I am glad to see Harry and Catherine laughing together. It makes a certain amount of sense to my mind that the tension is between the brothers not the wives. For one thing, the women just don't know each other too well. I find with new in-laws that while you might mentally roll your eyes at them or think they are vaguely irritating, there's not enough emotion there to come out in your body language to the press. Whereas H and W have years of history together to make even small arguments more loaded.

Beautiful coat dress, and love the hat as well. Great to see Kate and Harry together here. I hope if the rift between Harry and William is true, that they can find a way to repair it. Hopefully once the baby is born. Babies have a way of bringing families together.

Wow, is she a stunner! Love the color on her and thrilled to see she and Harry together, smiling, for such an important service.

I realize this is nit-picky but since this is a style blog, I would like to see Kate scale back her formal jewelry. In my opinion this is a great example of where the necklace was unnecessary. The hat is gorgeous and oppulent, the earrings beautiful and the neckline of the dress relatively stiff and high. If you place your pinky over the necklace in the 1st picture Charlotte posted, the overall look improves. I believe her formal ensembles move from fashionable to costumey when she wears excess jewelry. The Dutch State Dinner another example from recent memory.

I am clearly showing my age but I always followed the 3 point system for jewelry.

In any event, she is a gorgeous woman and every inch a future Queen.

    4. Rita in Florida25 April 2019 at 21:43

My uber fashionable grandmother taught me this trick when I was a young teenager and very interested in fashion. She was assured that I could count to 3 and it has served me well since.

The point system for accessorizing lends 1 point to each piece with the optimal number being 3. For example, earrings (1), necklace (1), and a bracelet (1). Or a headscarf (1), earrings (1) and a belt (1). To a large degree handbags or clutches do not count unless they are spectacular, and if so assign 1 point. Statement shoes depending upon color/style could be assigned 1 point. If a piece is oppulent, e.g. Kate's feathered hat today, that would be assigned 2 points. Kate's necklace from the Dutch State Dinner was 2 points. If a dress is embellished or complicated one might want to cut accessories back to 2 points assigning 1 point to the outfit.

For me the system works to balance accessories with the outfit in a way that enhances rather than eclipse. Silly I know but 50 years later I am still counting...

      Delete
    5. Rita, that's fascinating. 3 is a big number in interior & garden design, so I can see how it would work with the presentation of an ensemble. So would you say for today the numbers would have been better as..... Hat (2), earrings (1)? Now how would it work with the rest?...... i.e..... would it be shoes (1), clutch (1), gloves (1)?

      Delete
    6. The 3-point system makes a lot of sense. I think the necklace today took away from the look and that would fit your system. I love love the necklace but it needs to be loved on its own and not part of a fabulous coatdress.

      Delete
    7. Rita in Florida-oh my gosh, I’ve never thought about the balance like that before! Your grandmother’s a very wise woman. That makes perfect sense! Thank you so much for sharing! I will now do this 3 step rule going forward 👍🏻

    8. Well if you have pierced ears you are at “1” before you even get started so that doesn’t leave a lot of room for much more. The majority of the time I feel Kate is UNDER accessorized. So many times I have wished to see a bracelet, necklace, scarf, ANYthing.

  51. Seeing Harry and Kate together today just makes everything happy!! As much as he loves Kate, I doubt Harry would be so charming if there had been anything bad coming from Kate toward Meghan, so it seals my belief that while different people, there are NO problems between Kate and Meghan -- ever. Really, I just love seeing they pure joy together. (Can't wait for Louis and Baby Sussex to have the same sort of fun together.) Kate looks beautiful as usual, and while the outfit is a bit standard for her, why not? It's her type of beautiful "uniform," and I'm sure/hope we'll see it in the future. The color is one of my favorites, I like the green mixed in there, her feathery hat no doubt amused Harry, and it was a beautiful day. I'm sure Meghan and Doria can handle anything that arises, frankly. Meghan has plenty of resources, so I'm really glad that Harry chose to come to the service.

She is steadfast, it’s like she has become a fortress that can’t be overcome, it’s a message she’s sending, mostly to those other high ranking royals. You can’t touch me.... it’s strength.... she would never allow herself to be bullied into wearing something she doesn’t want. With the other royal women, it’s more of a guessing game, even with Meghan.... we never know what we are going to get... with Kate, it is strength to strength to strength..... I think she is brilliant by doing this...when she becomes queen.... her reputation will be set.... this allows her to do exactly what she wants in private..... there is no gray area for Kate.... public and private absolutely do not mix.

  61. I mentioned this on another site as well. I think there is too much fabric at the bottom of her dress. It needs some streamlining. It appears to engulf her (and she looks so much better with less stuff floating around her hips). Fit-and-flare generally works quite well for Kate, but this leaves me wanting to take some scissors and take some of the fabric out. There’s something bothering me about the hat too (Hat Queen on her site says it is just a tad too much feathered stuff happening, not as polished as we came to expect from her). But clearly overall elegant, maybe just me being a perfectionist.

Also lovely to see Kate and Harry together. I almost cried when I read the Telegraph article about the so-called feud. It breaks my heart to think how Harry felt like a second-tier child throughout his childhood. I hope he gets to really be himself now. Not just a ‘spare’.

  68. Thank you, Charlotte, for your thorough history, discriptions, details, and photos, today - an honorable tribute to commorate Anzac Day. I really enjoyed reading your article!
As for Prince Harry and Duchess Kate, it warmed my heart to see them, working together, enjoying each other's company, and, seemingly, being themselves - stress free.
I felt it was wonderful to see Harry step up to the plate and be the Prince, and senior royal that he is. This showed, clearly, today! Besides seeing Harry and Kate being happy and comfortable with each other, what I immediately saw in these photos and other vidios of this event, was Harry, representing the Queen and her family, with pride & honor. I was immediately impressed with his being there, in Prince William's stead, and he carried the day, brilliantly! On his own, like today, his presence is impressive, positive, and self-assured. I do not believe I have really seen Prince Harry in the role of a true senior royal, before. It was good to Harry, being Prince Harry, as he was meant to be. I hope he stays closeby, to help with the family duties, as he did today, yet, still being abke to be himself. I did not see 'a spare', or someone in Prince William's shadow, today. I saw A Royal Prince, the Duke of Sussex, the Queen's grandson, the future King(s)'s son and brother, represent the royal family, today, with sincere confident & pride. Well done, Harry.
Duchess Kate is just gorgeous, regal, warm, and glowing. She exudes a graceful command and strength about her. Regal.
I am not sure why these two stars were shining so bright, today, but, to me, they were.
It feels as though something special, or different, is going on and we don't know it, yet. Maybe it is just good PR, as someone mentioned in a previous post. Whatever it is, it is heartwarming, and very good to see!
As for the Duchess Kate'apprearance, I loved everthing she wore! The colors, cut, hair, jewelry, hat compliment her, and her personality. Some may complain about her repeat style and such, but it works, beautifully, for her! Prince William is a lucky man!

    2. Pg in NC, I love everything you said!! I think these brothers & the family are going through growing pains. No matter how many years you have to prepare for the realities of the future... change & transition are hard! Thats why we say growing "pains" not growing "happiness". Charles will need both William & Harry to step up during his reign & boy... no matter how old the Cambridge kiddos are, William will definitely need to count on Harry during his reign!! I feel sure when William is King we will see 2 very close brothers who have been preparing for these roles their whole life.... William being King & knowing & counting on Harry in a way he can with no other! Life is bumpy guys & it gets messy between siblings, in-laws & in marriages. But it's sticking together at the core throughout all that, that makes great relationships, marriages & families. We & this family has to look no further than HM & PP!!! What an example & gift & legacy they have given their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren & generations to come!! xx

And my opinion, for what it is worth, regarding the supposed brothers' 'rift' is that it is simply clip bait by the media. There are plenty of reports that conversation and welcoming between the two couples occur before an event or away from cameras. Focusing on the event at hand, and not being chummy, is being professional. Expecting the two brothers (and couples) to live together and do events together as if they are conjoined twins makes absolutely no sense because William and Harry are on two different life paths. The division of households is a natural occurrence since Harry is now married and he and Meghan will be welcoming their own new family member quite soon. And William and Catherine are moving more and more into their future roles.

  74. Love this outfit on Kate! I especially like the high collar and the color on her.

The photos of Kate and Harry together are simply lovely. I think they show, if any, the tension is between the two brothers and not Harry/Kate or Kate/Meghan. I love Harry and Kate's relationship and I hope William and Meghan have something very similar in the years to come.

The great baby wait 2019 is in full-force and can I just say how exceedingly excited I am for Harry and Meghan to become parents! What a wonderful time.

    Thank you, Charlotte, as always!

  75. Thank you Charlotte for an interesting post. I must say probably the one I have enjoyed the most recently in its entirety. No reflection on your journalism which is outstanding always but because I could read your report and all the comments and enjoy both. The comments are sometimes just happy but also at times critical and analytical as one would critique a novel in a book club but no instant calling out for real or percieved slights which I find tiresome which in itself engenders more of the same. Well done Charlotte community.
As a matter of interest when Harry first became involved with Meghan I wrote down a few points of how I thought the trajectory of coverage would go bearing in mind that steady good and smooth makes for fairly boring press and I include us the social press in that. So here we are
    Joy at the relationship
Excitement at the potential of a different type of person and background in the RF
    ??? on differences
Excitement at engagement and early appearances
Early pitting of members of RF and increased setting up of our expectations of where we thought the trajectory should be
Meghan family - I thought at the start they could be problematic
Excitement re wedding and then brideszilla type stories
    Kate Meghan conflict
    WK and HM conflict
    Camilla Meghan conflict

And that is pretty much how it has gone - most of which including our media is at best speculation. I also think that media guage the early trend of our social media comments and pitch the stories that way pretty much the way supermarkets control best seller lines. So we all have a responsibility.

The memorial services are so important. We should remember and thank all who gave for the greater good at big personal cost. Beautiful solemn services on both sides of the globe. Very uplifting and a time to reflect on how much can be given when the situation arises.

    1. You pretty much called it, Libby, on each prediction. The baby will be the next controversy drummed up by the media. Much gold for them to mine there. Don't take the bait, ladies. Don't give them your clicks. The more you read, the more they'll write. The more reaction they get from readers, the more fantastic the stories will become. "... steady good and smooth makes for fairly boring press..", indeed!

  77. I strongly encourage everyone to take 10 minutes and listen/watch William's speech from the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, NZ. It is understood that he wrote it himself. It is one of the best speeches I've ever heard him give, but far more than that, it is obvious that William has a tremendous ability to connect with those who have experienced severe trauma. He and Harry have this natural empathy that comes from their mother and from their life experiences. William is very reserved by nature, but in situations like this, his deeply personable side comes to the fore. My own personality is very similar to his, and we are nearly the same age (I'm 4 months older). People often grossly mistake my introverted, quiet, shy, and reserved manner as being standoffish, cold, and aloof. Nothing could be further from the truth and the same is true with William. We live in a world that favors extroversion and outgoing personalities. For those of us who are quiet, more sensitive, and reserved, it can be much harder to find our place and how we fit into such a world. Even though William's place has been mapped out since birth, he has found his niche in helping others who have experienced pain, grief, and trauma. His ability to really listen to others, learn about what they have been through and how they are feeling, and then to be present with them in their distress and pain is something that cannot be taught. That kind of presence and compassion has to be naturally within you, and oftentimes is born from adverse experiences in childhood and adolescence. William said to a group of first responders this week that "a good friend doesn't pick up the phone when people are in need. You travel to their place and put your arms around them." I think that statement embodies William's personal ethic. We see it in his work with mental health, in his family relationships, in his role as a husband and father, and every time he meets with individuals or groups like he did in New Zealand. He is someone who wants and strives to help others as a person, father, husband, and friend. And that, more than being a prince or future king, is his greatest role and service.

      Hello everyone...

It has been a long time since I have commented but I read both of your blogs regularly Charlotte and greatly enjoy the comments and dialogue of this community.

Sarah..I always appreciate the thoughtfullness and honesty in your comments. And today...I felt so strongly in agreement with what you said that I had to respond. I too have great respect for William and how well he carries out his responsibilities and his role. The pictures and videos from New Zealand showed a man who truly cares about communities and individuals and deeply wants to help. Over the years what some people have interpreted as an "unwillingness" to be King...I saw very differently. I saw it as a very reflective individual who understood the expectations of the role and carried the weight of those expectations. Will has been taught from a very young age what it means to be King by both his grandmother and his mother....He is very aware of the changing world we live in....I think the task of merging both of those situations is a load that he carries with gravity and seriousness.

I too am an introvert and have a profession that requires me to spend most of my days interacting with others . And for the most part ,...I greatly enjoy that aspect of my job. But by the end of the week...I am exhausted! I can only imagine how draining it is for William to do what he does.

The leadership, empathy and acceptance that William displayed in New Zealand moved me greatly . We need more of our leaders across the globe to do the same.

Sarah...thanks for articulating so beautifully an insightful perspective.

    2. Inspiring comment, Sarah. I hope somehow William reads it. It would feed his soul.

Traveling "to their place" isn't just a physical closeness; it means putting oneself in another's place emotionally--empathy. It is a reaching out beyond social, economic, and religious barriers.
I am fairly certain that William also intended that meaning.

    3. Thank you Laura. To be honest, I often feel deeply out of place within this blog community, because I just don't have an interest, the personality or capacity to participate in conversations about things such as fashion, styles, or appearance. I also don't handle small talk well at all, which makes talking with anyone difficult for me personally if I can't have a conversation that is substantive. I've never really felt like I fit in anywhere, except in my two vocations of mental health counseling and church ministry. I always wondered why this was and then I took the Myers-Briggs Personality test several times and upon seeing my personality type, I finally understood why fitting in has always been and continues to be so challenging for me.
Laura, I agree with your perspective on William. His time in New Zealand this past week should be an example to everyone. He did not just carry himself appropriately as a leader, he gave of himself as a person and sought to comfort and listen to so many who are hurting. The world needs more people who will listen and comfort, especially in this age of social media bullying and division in countries. If we took more time to listen and learn from one another, kindness, compassion, and empathy would be in great supply.

Thank you both, Sarah and Laura! I really enjoyed reading your comments. I agree with you about William and the way he sees the responsibilities of his role. I believe him to be a very caring person, willing to do his best wherever and whenever he can.
As for introverts/extraverts, I'm a real extravert who married a real introvert nearly 25 years ago, which is a good thing as it provides me with a certain degree of insight into both types of personality. I like a book by Susan Cain called "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" - I received it from my introverted brother-in-law and I can recommend it.
Please do comment again, Laura, if you feel like it! 🙂

    5. Zora, I've actually read that book by Susan Cain. I also recommend it. For those of us who are introverted, this world does seem like it never stops talking.

      2050,
I agree with you that William's remark to the emergency responders was not only about physical presence. Of course it included putting himself in another's shoes; the very meaning of empathy. I would add that one is best able to empathize by taking the time to be fully present, to actively listen, to ask questions, to ascertain another's feelings and concerns, and to offer appropriate help and support.

    6. Something I wonder about - what part Kate played in the development of William's character. What if he had married one of those socialite aristocrats?

    7. Sarah, that Myers-Briggs test is very insightful! I worked at the Am Heart Assoc as a journal editor but I did not get along with my supervisor. I drove her nuts, and I found her really distasteful. The whole company took the test and we discovered that our test results showed that we would clash. I don't remember more details other than I put people before the institution and she put the institution before people. That was why we could not agree on philosophical moves. (Also the fact that my office looked like a garage sale in progress was very irritating to her but comforting to me.)

    8. Wow...amazing comments here! I was so impressed with William & the leadership & empathy he displayed during his visit to first responders & the mosque victims. As an introvert myself, I find I relate more with William than any other Royal (& also maybe the Queen!). I really saw a lot of his mother in that speech. She, too, had the same warmth & empathy for others. William also reminds of Jacinda our PM. They are both great role models for young people & they made a great team.

    11. I think there is a difference between intellectual understanding (sympathy), being supportive, and empathising. I think empathy is on a feeling level and does not require physical presence. I have seen examples of eloquent empathy right here in this comment section, where we are not bound by our physical senses. The recipients have responded as though they felt and were helped by the sharing of feelings following a heartfelt comment.

It is also important, as Sarah indicates, to be supportive with an actual physical presence. To show up and ask questions about needs. It doesn't do much good to only share feelings about another's hunger; one must feed him, too. The human touch is a magical force.

William has become a hugger, as his Mum was. We also remember that he said he sought help with his feelings after his Mother's death. I think part of what he saw in Kate was someone who could help him channel those feelings and express his gift of empathy.

    12. Allison,
Yes, the Myers-Briggs test is very insightful and helpful. I took it in college twice (as a freshman and a senior) and again in graduate school. It was required all 3 times by the universities. My personality type is INFJ and the more I have learned about and researched that type, the more comfortable I've become with its rarity and uniqueness. It can be difficult for certain personality types to work or coexist with one another, particularly in the work place. Sometimes, if people learn their types and how best to relate to each other, those differences can be overcome. But, that is not always possible, and I have had supervisors in the past who I could not work with, because our personalities, perspectives, and worldview were incompatible.

      2050:
While I do think that Kate and William have likely helped each other's character development over the years, I think the foundations for both came from their families. Kate and William seem to have very similar personalities, and they are always at ease and secure with one another. I do think that the Middleton family helped give William a secure support network that he did not experience throughout the separation and divorce of his parents. I think both Diana and Charles have been a substantial influence on him in different ways, and they also gave him the space to become an individual. Neither tried to mold him in their image. Yes, they exposed him to things and causes that were important to them, but they also wanted him to be his own person. Queen Victoria really struggled with that concept with her 9 children. She desperately wanted each of them to be carbon copies of their father, Albert, and was always frustrated and disappointed when that did not come to fruition. I think Queen Elizabeth has been a mentor to William in so many ways (as well as grandmother), and their close relationship is reminiscent of the one she had with her father.
It will be interesting to see George, Charlotte, and Louis' personalities develop over the coming decades. They are growing up in a steady secure family unit, which is deeply important to Kate and William. That can only help.

    13. Sarah, I appreciate the fact that there have been other influences than Catherine in William's life. I would also like to add that I have enjoyed this interesting (and civilized) discussion. The Middleton family was there when William most needed them. He was away at University and experiencing life outside the royal cocoon. Apparently, even when he was at Eton he was having weekly tea at Windsor with the Queen. The Middletons gave William a taste of average family life and seem to have supported William emotionally . I think they may have provided a template for what relationships amongst equals should look like.
I agree that both Charles and the Queen have been influences. Charles recently proudly proclaimed his influence on his sons in their charitable causes and environmental issues; there was no mention of Diana's contribution, however. We have no way of knowing just how HM influenced William's character development. I assume the words "duty" and "service" were frequently used. In fact, William has mentioned a number of times this model for stewardship his grandmother provided.

All these influences need to be considered through the lens of the accepted child development fact that the early, formative years are those that create the mold. That is the basis for Catherine's initiatives. It forms the framework for the stated goals of William and Catherine's parenting. Although I agree that seeing the paths their children take in the future will be interesting, I do think all three children already show signs of distinct personalities.
Remember who was most present in William's life during those formative years as well as the family dynamics in play then. I also think there is a fine line between "giving a child space to develop" and being absent-physically or emotionally- due to one's own needs and interests.

  78. The rift is mentioned, so I'll add a positive thought. I read last night that family members in addition to W&K went to visit Meghan (and Doria) on Easter. We saw Harry purposefully position himself by Zara and Autumn -- perhaps it was to reassure them that it was still OK to come over, that Meghan felt well and was not in labor, etc. That's the sort of info that really needed to be given at the last minute.

  79. Well said, Libby @21:43. That’s exactly what the media and news outlets do. I will always remember the advise the Duchess of Cambridge gave to someone during an engagement. She said, “DON’T believe everything you read”. Charlotte, thanks for the history lesson. I always enjoy this part of your narrative. The Duchess looks lovely, nice color on her. Fantastic seeing the Duchess and her brother-in-law, Prince Harry attend the service together.
