Kate chose the garden of their leafy country home, Anmer Hall, as the backdrop for Louis' birthday photos. Louis is dressed in a red jumper and a similar blue one featuring a puppy on the front. Those Cambridge cheeks :)
The Palace said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to share three new photographs of Prince Louis ahead of his first birthday tomorrow."
More from The Telegraph's senior picture editor, Lee Martin.
'The Duchess of Cambridge’s photographs of Prince Louis, like other birthday pictures of her children, are a loving and personal moment captured on camera for the family album and the history books. You can employ a number of styles to portraiture and the Duchess has chosen the simple method of using natural light and a shallow depth of field. She has used both perfectly.
Placing Louis in a shaded area so that he is illuminated by diffused light avoids any harsh shadows across his face, while at the same time producing a bright colourful background. Because she has used a wide aperture, she has softened the background to a gentle blur, helping to isolate the subject and avoid distractions. She also avoids placing Louis directly in the centre of the landscape image, which is a definite plus in my book.'
Rebecca English notes Louis wore the £35 Trotters Little Puppy Jumper. It's described as: "Our bestselling Puppy Jumper for baby boys now comes in a smart denim blue colour and features our sweet puppy intarsia design on the front. Made in a soft, warm cashmere mix it's a must have for layering this spring."
Prince George's first birthday portraits were taken at the Natural History Museum by John Stillwell and Princess Charlotte's in Norfolk by Kate.
On a sunny St George's Day morning, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their third child on 23 April 2018. It all began shortly after 8 am when Kensington Palace confirmed the Duchess had been admitted to the Lindo Wing at 6 am in "the early stages of labour". Kate travelled from the Palace by car with William. At 1.05 pm, the Palace confirmed the Duchess had been safely delivered of a son weighing 8 lbs 7 oz at 11.01 am.
A few short hours later, Kate was ready to depart for home. As with George and Charlotte, they posed on the steps of the Lindo Wing to introduce their son to the world. Kate was undoubtedly feeling a mixture of emotions from sheer joy to exhaustion as she held her baby in her arms. She chose a bespoke Jenny Packham red dress with a white lace peter pan collar.
The newborn, fifth-in-line to the throne, was the first in history not to overtake a female sibling in the line of succession. The Telegraph noted: "Under the 2013 Succession to the Crown Act, the male-preference primogeniture was replaced with absolute primogeniture. The act meant any royal born after 28 October 2011 would precede his or her siblings, regardless of sex. It means Princess Charlotte remains fourth in line to the throne with the new (male) baby at fifth in line."
Our first proper look at the prince came on 5 May when the Palace shared two photos to provide a glimpse at Louis and to celebrate Charlotte's birthday. This image of big sister Lottie kissing her brother is darling.
And this one :)
Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge was baptised at The Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, on 9 July.
The occasion marked the first time the Cambridges had been publicly seen together as a family of five.
The intimate christening was attended by the Charles, Camilla, the Sussexes, Middletons and godparents. The couple chose Kate's cousin Lucy Middleton and close friends Nicholas van Cutsem, Guy Pelly, Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, Laura Meade and Hannah Gillingham. Kate couldn't take her eyes off Baby Louis at the christening and was photographed gazing lovingly at him in several of the images.
The portraits were taken at Clarence House's Morning Room following the christening at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, by renowned photographer Matt Holyoak. The photographer said "I was truly honoured at being asked to take the official photographs at the christening of Prince Louis, and to witness at first hand such a happy event. Everyone was so relaxed and in such good spirits, it was an absolute pleasure. I only hope I have captured some of that joy in my photographs."
The Palace released an additional photograph of Kate and Louis with the message "Their Royal Highnesses hope that everyone enjoys this lovely photograph of Prince Louis as much as they do." The photo was taken by Matt Porteous, the photographer took George's third birthday portraits.
There was a very special treat in store among Prince Charles' 70th birthday portraits; a fabulous photo of the Prince of Wales with Kate and Louis. In an interview with The Telegraph, the Duchess of Cornwall revealed: 'We had a picture the other day with Louis pulling on his hair, and he’s not one of those people who says ‘take your hand away’. He loves it. He’s exceptionally good with very small children and babies."
Louis had changed so much since his christening. Those expressions :)
There was a festive royal surprise from Kensington Palace in December with the release of a new family photograph of the Cambridges for their Christmas card. The image was taken last autumn at Anmer Hall and offered our last look at a smiling Louis.
His Royal Cuteness on the front pages.
Happy Birthday little prince!
Wow wow wow! STUNNING child and wonderful photographs. Healthy, happy, and handsome :) Happy birthday, Prince Louis!
ReplyDeleteThis lifts my spirits from all the William/Harry rift stuff. :(
I so agree Florida Girl. I want things to be normal again and everyone getting along. This is so painful to imagine - I keep hoping it’s not true, but.....
DeleteThe “Fab 4 are no more” - and what a shame. I wanted them to team up on a project and knock it out of the park. Reality is not pretty.
Praying for healing, understanding and empathy between them.
Well said, Rhonda.
DeleteI never really saw the "fab 4" thing that everyone was so crazy about, it was clear from the get-go that this was not happening. and really I think its better this way. the last thing the BRF needs is another diana/Fergie melt down. really there is nothing wrong with them not being BFF's. they are all grown adults and I think they get along just fine. they have known each other for what, 2 years? and met how many times?? I don't know about you all but I don't just let folks in, and especially if I were the future queen of England!! id love to know what normal is? who is to say they are not getting along? tabloids are just that. not walking next to your brother does not mean angst central. praying for folks to give them a break.
Delete@Caroline in Montana: You are very wise.
DeleteI agree with you, Caroline. They are adults, each with families and certain interests. That they are siblings doesn't mean they have to live in each other's pockets. I see my siblings maybe once a year!
DeleteI have a very close relationship with both my siblings (and growing with my sister-in-law). It makes me sad, given their circumstances, that they don't get along. I mean, not being close is one thing, openly feuding is another.
DeleteAdorable! Wonderful! Perfect!
ReplyDeleteI choose to wait to look at the pictures until the embargo lifted (took some fair amount of willpower!) and they are so cute! What a cute boy! I love the moss on his clothes!
I love how all the kids have their own distinct look! I mean, they look sibling similar, but they look individual!
Can't belive he's already 1! And thanks for the great recap!
His Royal Cuteness, indeed! Such a sweet face and big, expressive eyes. Happy first birthday to little Louis! 🎂🎈
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely precious. Boy Charlotte - you are right. He really does favor Kate. Cuteness overload. I cannot believe it's been a year....I can only imagine how they feel!
ReplyDeleteI was happy to see this adorable snap because I must admit this "rift" between the brothers has me feeling a bit blue. Where there is smoke there is fire and it has me a bit sad having watched the princes since their toddler photos! May it all work itself out as these things do.
God bless the Cambridge family!
I echo your thoughts on the rift. Nothing has brought me down so much about the Royal Family in a long long time. I so hope it isn't true but they know it's being talked about yet made no effort to display anything to dispel the rumors. I will lose a lot of interest, after a lifetime of interest, if those two really can't get along and publicly display it - especially considering the Queen won't be around much longer. These changes make me so sad.
DeleteIf Prince Harry had walked with his brother and appeared to be having a grand time, the tabloids would have concocted a story of how he can’t stand his demanding shrew of a bride, and is eager to divorce her. It’s nonsense. All families have an ebb and flow in their relationships and I put no stock in sources who are motivated by money. Everyone will sort themselves out once Harry and Meghan have their baby.
DeleteGreybirdk, I could not agree with you more!! I'm glad they appear to just act natural and don't act for the camera depending on what's in the fake news, now that would make me loose interest! this is a long game and its a real family, so yes things happen but No one knows what they are thinking or feeling.
Deletegreybirdk and Caroline, I so agree. In the past, Harry has been in the military or running a bit wild. When he appeared with W&K, he and Kate were often laughing and teasing. Or sometimes Harry looked very gloomy and alone. Now he has his wife, and the four necessarily form two couples. I imagine Kate felt the loss more than Will, but the idea that these four people who are used to dealing with so many people cannot sort out any issues does not seem likely. And how upsetting would that be for Charles and the Queen?? Harry is totally involved with Meghan, and that is very understandable. She gives him what he wants and provides new interests. Look how his life has changed in 2 years! I imagine that W&K will be a good uncle and aunt to Baby Sussex; it appears that H&M love their nephews/niece even though WE have not seen any interaction. It is crazy to think that Meghan and Kate would be best friends -- they are in the 30s, they are not needy, and they have cultivated their own best friends for many years. That Instagram from the Cambridges was meant to show the Queen with PP, not to cut out Meghan (or Harry). I think the sweetness of Meghan's Instagram messages will help us realize that fake news is just fake.
DeleteOh! He is adorable! I wonder if he is going to be a big talker since in most pictures he has his mouth open! Ha! I am happy that he is wearing burgundy as well as blue. These were very sweet and natural pictures. I love them!
ReplyDeleteOf all the Cambridge children, Louis definitely takes after Kate the most. I hope the birthday boy has a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteHe is Kate`s twin!! What an adorable little boy!!!!
ReplyDeleteFanTAStic photos! An adorable little boy and wonderful pics! Thank you. Charlotte, for your usual stellar information!
ReplyDeleteLouis is an even balance of George and Charlotte in appearance, while still having his own distinct characteristics. I wonder if he is walking yet. He may be speed crawling and cruising around by holding onto furniture and other sturdy objects. Louis is adorable, as are George and Charlotte. I guess William will have to fly out to New Zealand at some point tomorrow, given how long the flight takes. But, I hope they are able to enjoy as much of Louis' birthday together as they can. They might have even celebrated today too.
ReplyDeleteI might be totally wrong but I seem to remember Kate mentioning that he was walking at some engagement a while back. But I'm not sure!
DeleteI think she said that Louis was cruising (walking while holding onto furniture or another person's hands) at one of her last engagements in March. It does not matter if he's independently taking steps, cruising, crawling, or a combination of all three. Children develop at different rates and at their own pace. I didn't start walking until I was 2 years old, and my oldest child also didn't start walking until the age of 2. What matters most is their health and wellbeing, and not the individual milestones. I love that Louis has been crawling around in the grass and has moss on his clothing. I think it is especially touching that Kate captured these pictures outdoors, as she is an advocate (and rightly so) for children spending time outside for their physical and mental wellbeing. We know that they relish spending time outdoors as a family, especially at Amner where they have much more privacy.
DeleteLOVE the eyebrows ! what a cutie
ReplyDeleteYes! Those brows are too cute! Such an expressive face :)
DeleteThey eyebrows on this child!! I love it. What a cutie :)
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same. I’ve never seen such distinctive eyebrows on a baby before!
DeleteWow!I'm speechless....
ReplyDeleteHe has changed so much! he looks so much like Kate. beautiful, adorable baby and great shots by Kate. I think the family shots are better than the formal shots any day! the future is looking good:) Thanks Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteThe future is very bright! These photos gave me all the warm fuzzies :) I needed this after all the terrible news of late...looking forward to William arriving in Auckland tomorrow to honour ANZAC day & then onto Christchurch to pay respects to the mosque terrorist attack victims.
DeleteForgive me, I meant William’s arriving on Thursday, not tomorrow.
DeleteOne word: Adorable!
ReplyDeleteAnd now we see why Kate has been so happy! She has 3 cuties at home :) All 3 children look like they have fun personalities and are filled with curiosity. Bravo.
ReplyDeleteJane
Have been looking forward to this and wow, it did not disappoint. Louis is a beautiful child! He is a perfect blend of the Cambridges! He has a very expressive face and I'll bet the personality to go along with it. Can't wait to see the three siblings together!!
ReplyDeleteI needed this happy boost and these pictures deliver. I love that Lee Martin gives Kate the credit he does to her photography, her style and her execution. Not that these pictures need any endorsement, but its nice that she is professionally acknowledged. Love the moss on his jumper! Very natural and captures a loving moment. Happy Birthday to Prince Louis who looks to be a very happy child. cc
I thought it looked like cut grass rather than moss and he must have been rolling in it to get it on himself. It is nice that she didn't brush it off! I wonder if that jumper is handknitted? It looked like it was. As for all the speculation about family relationships, I think we should keep out of it.
DeleteThanks Charlotte. To be fair the shots from Christmas and His grandfather birthday didn't do him justice nor gives away his distinctive facial characteristic and I think that Kate know haw to take her children photos better than professional photographs. The three child Have eacha different eye color: one took after the grandfather, one very Windsor, and the last very Kate even her smile :).No wonder that she cant take her eyes from him.
ReplyDeleteHaven't Louis and George both brown eyes?
DeleteLuis eyes seems green to me and they are more clear than his brother's but I may be wrong.
DeleteThe children change so quickly -- I hope Charles has a family photo each year so we can see how they all change, and to see them altogether.
ReplyDeleteThe children all have eyes colour on the brown/Hazel spectrum; depending on natural lighting/artificial lighting, their eyes may appear to be lighter or darker, but each is classified as brown on official records.
DeleteVery cute. I actually think he looks a lot like William. Fun to see the photos.
ReplyDeleteI think so too that he looks like William!! Gosh, I'm writing a comment after such a long time! I missed this blog and it's regular visitors. XOXO Siddhii
DeleteSiddhii, I remember you from the very beggining!
DeleteWe were a small community and look how many people now! :)
It’s been quite a while since the last time I posted as well!
AWWWW.. He has changed - but looks like Kate as of now.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I get so excited on your birthdays!
XOXOXOXO
What wonderful photos of the little prince, captured with such love and skill by his lovely mom, the Duchess. I absolutely love the twiggy evidence of his nature walk/crawl on his sweater, too. Their Royal Highnesses appear to be raising happy, down-to-earth children, bless them. I like to picture the smile on Princess Diana's face over these beautiful ones.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, he looks just like his mother! He even laughs with his mouth open as the Duchess does when she's tickled laughing! He's absolutely adorable isn't he? My goodness, those cheeks! He makes me feel all broody! My youngest is 15, so thats a no for sure, but oh does he give me the baby cravies! Great post Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteI do understand you, encrerose...my youngest is 15 as well! 😃Well, we can always hope for a cute grandchild in the future!!
DeleteBest wishes adorable Prince
ReplyDeleteOMG - what a cutie!!! I agree, he definitely favors his Mum....and those cheeks!! He’s just adorable! Kate really takes the most amazing pictures of her children. The love just shines through.
ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte for all the photos of Prince Louis. Here’s wishing the birthday boy a day filled with lots of fun and love. 🎂🎉
oh my god she resemble of her mom when she was a kid happy birthday prince louie he exactly look her mom
ReplyDeleteSo cute! To me he really looks so different than George and Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous photos. Such a lucky boy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous boy, if a boy can be called gorgeous. Anyway, he is.
ReplyDeleteAdorable.
ReplyDeleteIt 's hard to believe that our little prince turns 1!Louis 's charming, lively, happy and adorable baby.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Prince Louis! God bless you.
How gorgeous are these photos of Prince Louis, he certainly is a happy, sunny child. His smile gave me the biggest smile too!
ReplyDeleteI am a little heartsick though over the relationship between William and Harry. I believe that most of what we have heard in the past year about Meghan and Harry and their relationship with the Cambridges has been truly in the gutter journalism ... but this situation I am sad to say I think is true. I watched the video of arrivals to the church with an increasingly heavy heart. I now don’t have any doubt that something has gone very wrong between the boys. They have never acted like they were today. Sadly the press are not going to let this one go. This broke my heart a little bit. 😞😞
I seriously don't believe a word of any of this nonsense. As close as William and Harry have been since the death of their Mum, what would ever come between them? It would have to be something truly awful. The media just makes up stories, and then they quote each other to back their stories. Sometimes they even link to their own articles, as if that is proof. The only way I would ever believe there was a rift between William and Harry, is if I heard either so them say so with their own mouth.
DeleteRM, I TOTALLY agree!! A few seconds of video is proof of nothing. How do we know that they didn't visit with each other for hours before and after the service. The press always prints negative things. It's total nonsense that there is any bitterness among any of them. I'm happy for the brothers and their families.
DeleteWonderfully expressive face! Mum is a great photographer, too.
ReplyDeleteAdorable boy, lovely pictures! He resembles his brother and sister very much, but with his own characteristics.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Louis!
Oh, these photos are so lovely! It is striking how distinct he is. He looks older than a 1-year old baby! I think this may reflect the fact that he is the 3rd child: always after his older siblings, much more independent, very lively... I believe he's going to be fun and relaxed and very clever. The Cambridges are so blessed and I'm sure they realise it!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the great post, Charlotte!
Oh he is just so sweet. What wonderful pictures, taken by his mama.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Prince Louis! Such a gorgeous little lad! He looks more like William, to me. Those cheeks!
ReplyDeleteOMG cuteness overload. What a happy, handsome boy! Prince Louis, I cannot wait to find out more about your future cheekiness, it is brimming from his whole person. The Cambridges are blessed with such beautiful healthy, happy children, and I hope they realise this :-)
ReplyDeleteCharlotte, thanks for the retrospective of Louis’s photos. He does favor Kate. She did a marvelous job capturing her handsome little boy.
ReplyDeleteGeez what a cutie!! He looks like such a mix of George and Charlotte. His mum takes great pictures!
ReplyDeleteOh my word! Cuteness Overload! :) Loving photos taken by a loving Mum! I love seeing Kate's photography & love the window the photos give into the life of little Louis! Kate Loves..... being outdoors with her much loved children!! :) xxx
ReplyDeleteDelightful photos: such a happy little boy and the image of Catherine.
ReplyDeleteHope they all have a lovely day.
I note the US President and First Lady are coming on a state visit in June, to coincide with the "D Day" commemorations.
SussexRoyal Instagramed a really cute happy birthday to Louis. Sounds like H&M see the kids fairly often, which doesn't sound like a feud. I'm beginning to think that Harry and Will communicate via phone a lot and thus are interested in other people when they gather. I guess we won't see "the boys" playing polo anymore, but they're grown up now with kids. And this thing about Will cautioning Harry about Meghan is really in the past -- William has since kissed Meghan and accompanied Harry to the wedding. They spent holidays together, away from our view. They looked pretty happy at Charles' birthday photo. It is really hard to fight back against the media, but you could create a feud between any number of RF members. They seem to socialize away from our eyes pretty successfully.
ReplyDeleteWhy wouldn't they play polo any more? They do it every year for their charities' benefit. When did they spend holidays together?!? And if it was away from our eyes how would you know? I do not believe in the big feud either but I love getting facts right and sticking to them. Best, Imke
DeleteI didn't see that happy birthday on the Instagram page?
DeleteI read that "the boys" will still be playing polo, but less. After all, they are getting older, and busier which was the reason given for cutting down on the number of matches played in the future. I think Harry will still play in the Sentebale Cup for his charity. I read that Audi has withdrawn sponsorship of polo in general, but will still sponsor special events such as Harry's charity. We might still see the brothers play together yet!
DeleteSince the state visit was brought up, I wonder if Charles/Camilla and William/Kate will be part of it? I guess I mean to say that I wonder if the Queen will participate as usual. I was surprised to hear about it.
ReplyDeleteKate seems to truly DELIGHT in her children. What a wonderful mother she is. The little prince is as beautiful as ever and always seems to be smiling. So wonderful.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY to Prince Louis! He is soooo cute and charming.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a photo of Kate at his same age, and I think he really looks like her. These are great photos and Kate is really professional. Well done!
I hope we will see some others for Charlotte birthday coming up...;):)
Soooo cute!!! I'm melting! I love this family and truely admire their simplicity!
ReplyDeleteoh he is so darling ! happy bday to him he does look like Kate. Great post as usual Charlotte
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to see Kate's upcoming engagements! Looking forward to all of them, especially the Cambridges' trip to Wales. No doubt the visit to Anglesey area will bring special memories!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute child; adorable. I agree, Prince Louis resembles the Duchess of Cambridge at this stage of his life. Thanks, Charlotte. Interesting insights on camera angle / lighting, etc. Thanks again, Charlotte.
ReplyDelete
