The Duchess of Cambridge Visits Little Village in Brent

Fresh from the weekend's unforgettable Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out this afternoon to lend a helping hand to Little Village in Brent.

During summer 2020, amidst the most difficult restrictions during the pandemic, the Duchess revealed she was "moved to tears" by stories of families she heard during a private visit to one of Baby Basics Norfolk's branches and was determined to help with their plight. Kate has brought nineteen leading British brands on board to donate over 10,000 items to over forty baby banks across the UK.

One of the beneficiaries was Little Village -- London’s largest baby bank network, with eight locations across the capital. Since then, the Duchess has kept in touch and continued working with baby banks. I thought it one of Kate's most impressive projects to date, offering essential supports which would positively impact families during an unimaginably difficult time.

Kensington Palace said: "The charity equips families with clothes, toys and essential items for babies and children up to the age of five, including nappies, beds, buggies and toiletries, as well as linking them with key services. Families are referred to the charity via a network of professionals such as midwives, health visitors and social workers, and can either receive items through home deliveries or by coming into their local centre. Since launching in 2016, Little Village’s team of more than 600 volunteers have responded to nearly 20,000 requests for support across London, reaching over 22,000 children. Little Village Brent opened in November 2021 and aims to help around 40 families from the borough of Brent each week. During her visit, the Duchess will meet some of the centre’s volunteers as they sort through donations, and hear more about how Little Village works with each individual family to understand their personal needs and preferences in order to provide a tailored package of support."

Kate spent time with families and volunteers before getting to work helping to pack much needed bags and supplies.

Volunteer Faiza spent time with the Duchess and said: "As a mother herself The Duchess really showed a lot of empathy and care about the work Little Village are doing. She was lovely and engaging and was keen to hear about how families feel when they visit our baby bank. She was very interested in hearing about how much thought and care goes into the bundles we prepare for families."

Mum Sara with two children under three added: "It was incredible to meet The Duchess of Cambridge, she was really kind and listened to what I had to say. I told The Duchess how much Little Village has helped us, they have been like a second family to me."

Sophie Livingston MBE, CEO of Little Village said: "We were all absolutely delighted to welcome The Duchess of Cambridge to Little Village Brent. She met some of our staff and volunteers and helped to pick out some beautiful items of clothing for the family’s two young children. The Duchess really took her time to talk our staff and volunteers, who all said how down to earth she was and how engaged and interested she was in the work of Little Village. This is set to be our busiest year yet, and we expect to see a thousand more children than we did in 2021 and we know that baby banks across the country are facing similar demand. This boost from The Duchess will help to shine a light on the work of baby banks and will hopefully lead to increased support for their much-needed work."

The Palace added: "When families visit Little Village hubs in person, the charity works to ensure that they are treated with love, kindness and dignity. The Duchess will meet a family who are being supported by Little Village Brent to hear about their experiences of using the centre, including the impact of being able to choose for themselves the objects that they need from an extensive stock of high-quality donated items."

The video below features lovely footage of Kate meeting little ones.

The Duchess was in a mix of new and familiar pieces.

The Duchess sported the Inverted Lapel Long Blazer by ZARA (with thanks to Georgie's Mum and Heaven).

Kate carried a lovely new bag by Massimo Dutti. The white woven leather handbag is part of the brand's Care for Planet range.

More on the effort:

"This leather was produced in tanneries awarded the Leather Working Group Gold or Silver certifications. LWG is a protocol that audits the tanning process in terms of energy and water use, waste management and the use of pre-approved chemicals in the tanning processes".

It very much looks like Kate wore her Roland Mouret Axon trousers. They're crafted from a stretch blend to ensure a comfortable and flattering fit, and are shaped with wide legs that are defined by front and back pressed creases.

Kate wore her Gianvito Rossi 105 pumps in black suede.

And accessorised with Kiki McDonough citrine drop earrings.

Great to see Kate's work with Little Village continuing.

  1. The Duchess is looking very stylish today, in a smart casual way. Yet another absolutely fantastic cause that she is bringing attention to today. Credit where it is due. All her work to date has been 10/10. She looks very happy today. I think everyone is very pleased with how well the weekend went. S. ☺

  2. After all the pagetry, the beige and black (and gorgeous bag) look just wonderful!! And how pretty is her hair? The view of her hair from the side is just lovely. A great charity to visit. And I want to add that it's crazy to criticize her for Louis (who I really enjoyed watching) because obviously her children behave admirably all the time when they are a year or two older. And how unfair is it when she doesn't have the option of removing him to another room for a nap or snack or timeout! She had to be in front of millions -- truly a rough job and she had SO much to do in general for the Jubilee. Also, you want children to feel free, to not be afraid -- people who criticize are really pushing the limit of sanity.

    1. Allison, I couldn't agree more. I saw those comments that were taken down. Question, Why would a grown man come for a 4 year old child and a mother under pressure with the eyes of the world watching 🤔. The Queen was obviously the star of the whole weekend but I think Prince Louis stole the show. He won everyone's hearts. Seeing him with his Grandfather was a highlight for me. The whole weekend couldn't of went any better for the Royal family. The future Royal family on show. Maybe some people are bringing the negative because they are not happy about it 🤔. S. ☺

    2. I'm glad someone said this. He's just barely 4. Leave him alone. And stop acting like Kate isn't a great mum.

    3. I completely agree that little thumbnail shots of moments are indicative of the entire picture. Fortunately, there are many places on the internet that aren't filled with negativity about the weekend, that show a very loving and quite frankly, an interactive family. It was so nice to see all the children! Mike Tindall gave a great response on his podcast about the kids just being themselves and having fun, and that there was a major 'sugar rush' involved, what with snacks and all!! I think all the parents handled it very well and honestly, it has given me a better insight into the family dynamics, which are heartwarming to see!

    4. What was important was that Louis was there. One day when he is old and grey he will be telling how as a very small child he witnessed and was part of the great celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of his great grandmother. No one will remember that the media chose to be obsessed with his four year old antics.

    5. It was not the media but a particular group of people online.

I love that she cared so much, she went back to help this group. It’s an example to all of us to help where we can. And…. I want that blazer ! As for little Louie, he’s just turned four, and the press chose to publish his photos and not his Mom’s reactions.

  8. How is it Kate is perky & out and about? I’m still recovering from the Jubilee - the Paddington Tea Party did me in.

I love Kate wearing UK items, always have. Now more than ever.

  9. What a sleek, stylish look! I wasn't expecting to hear from the Duchess the rest of this week after the busy long weekend. How nice of her to show up, bring attention to a great cause, and all this while looking impeccable!

Exactly, IBR! Well said. I love how kind and natural she is!
Also, I almost never notice make-up and have never commented on it but today I've noticed (in the video) how gentle it is. And her hair... fabulous!

  10. I love this look- very elegant and one of my favorite blazers because it’s so sleek. I enjoyed seeing so much of the children and their personalities this weekend. Remember how they criticized Charlotte for sticking out her tongue during the regatta? Now she’s so poised! Thanks Charlotte! Sue

  11. It's impressive to see the level of support the Brits offer to their communities--from art spaces for mental well-being, to nappies & clothes for struggling families to ... everything else you can think of. Very touching.

  12. I'm so impressed to see her again so soon after the jubilee weekend. This is a great cause and I hope her presence helps them. I prefer her in straight legged trousers but she looks very polished and appropriate and I think wearing something more affordable (Zara) was a good shout after the (understandably) more expensive choices over the weekend. She's a diplomat! I think it would be cool, Charlotte, if you could do a post comparing Kate's fashion during the diamond and platinum jubilees. She took a slow and steady approach but I really do think she's come a long way. Best wishes to everyone.

  13. An important cause. I wish we could do the same with baby formula needs in the US, except, of course, that while the issues are related, they are significantly different. Still....

This is a very nice casual-professional look. As I've said, I have stopped buying Zara blazers, because they are of low quality and lack the fit and drape I prefer, but as a short term wardrobe item, this jacket looks fine.

The trousers are terrific. I'd love to buy them for myself, and I'm a sucker for woven leather bags. I can't afford Bottega Veneta, so this Massimo Dutti example delights me! However, the stiletto heels didn't work with the outfit. Block heels would have been better.

    1. Catherine supporting UK Charities is the right thing to do. America has a supply issue and many countries including Australia has sent large supplies over. The UK like most countries is struggling with poverty and should look after it’s own people.

  14. What a great charity and love her continued involvement. I only wish she had brought somethings to donate. I’m sure they donate plenty across many charities. She looks great today. What a week!

  16. I think Kate looks quite chic today in a business casual outfit. It’s also quite smart of her to wear affordable Zara to an event that supports families in need. B2B is a similar charity in the US that M&H support. (celticgirl)

  19. Thanks for the post, Charlotte. Lovely to see HRH (and you) dive straight into more work after a busy week. It seems like the Little Village is thriving (and what a great name). I have to admit that I am disappointed to see that they appear really rigid on sorting baby clothes as boy/girl. I would have thought that HRH's team would have chosen a more inclusive backdrop (and try to influence the charity itself in this regard). Especially since it's PRIDE at the moment!

    1. I didn't know they sorted like that. That's just wrong -- seems like all clothes should be for all children with special categories of "dresses" and "over-the-top decorated items."

      Delete
    2. I’m sure a request for different clothes would be available. The majority of boy/ girl clothes would be entirely appropriate for the majority of families. Charities can only do so much and I find it rather unusual to shame a charity like that.

    3. Did I miss something? I don't see that anywhere in the text about being rigid on sorting by boy/girl. In the photo of Kate kneeling by the books there is a rack of what looks like winter coats that seem to be sorted by item and by color (lighter to darker), which would seem like the more practical way to sort, ie.e item and color.

    4. I agree, it is shaming a charity that is doing great work. And it is splitting hairs. Parents can do whatever they like, choose how they want to dress their children. Why should anyone, Kate or the charity try to influence them? That would be patronising,. They may be poor but still have the right to raise their children conforming to their beliefs.

  20. I really like skate in these smart casual outfits. I’m glad to see a return of the side part hair style I still think it could be shorter.

  21. Great look on Kate, and love her hair! It is nice to learn about these charities, especially since things are a bit difficult all over. Am from the US, and during the pandemic saw many churches and cars lined up to receive food from their food banks, which stepped up to include baby items, diapers, wipes, etc., and while I thought that it would subside somewhat, I still see long lines of cars lined up at three different churches in my area and a large number of volunteers helping. I am constantly humbled by the number of people in many communities who devote their time to helping others and appreciate that Kate is highlighting their work, and that they are getting some recognition for their efforts, but also that more people may become aware of the services and help available. Such a worthy charity!

On another note, have to say that ALL of the royal ladies have been stepping it up fashion wise. Loved all of Kate's looks during Jubilee especially at the Trooping of Color and the Thanksgiving Service. Zara, Beatrice and Eugenie were all very nicely turned out, and loved how each of their separate looks suited them individually. And if anybody is watching the Duchess of Wessex in Gilbraltar, she has been quite impressive.
