"My Heart Has Been with You": The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Culminate with Pageant & Balcony Appearance

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations culminated with Big Lunches all over the country and a star-studded pageant in honour of the monarch's historic reign. This is going to be an absolutely packed post which I hope you enjoy reading as much as I did writing.

It all began with several rather early lunches in aid of the community focused Big Lunches which were held all over the world.

The Cambridges shared adorable photos of Kate and the children baking for today's street parties in Cardiff, the results of which were delivered yesterday during their visit to Wales.

I love the Union Jack cupcake cases and bunting in the background.

Whipping up a storm.

The children appeared to be having a brilliant time.

A lovely mother-daughter shot. Kate wore her a Brora Gingham top with her & Other Stories jeans. Emily suggests the Duchess may have worn a pendant and earrings by Auree Jewellery. We won't know for certain until we see them again and can examine high-res photos.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall had a wonderful time at the Oval cricket ground in south London, with 500 attendees including 70 "platinum champions" from the Royal Voluntary Service. An ambassador for the RVS told the Telegraph Charles said he was having "a marvellous time", adding: "He seemed very relaxed and full of good humour. His opening comment was - because it was only half-past 11 - 'It's a little early for lunch'."

Sarah Friar, CEO of neighbourhood app Nextdoor, told the Mail Online: "He said at the end how great it was that everyone comes together this weekend." Gemma Snow, from the Eden Project, was sitting next to the Prince of Wales at the lunch for a few minutes and said he talked about "keeping that togetherness going" after the bank holiday weekend.

It's been dubbed the 'Long Lunch' due to the record-breaking numbers in attendance. Sophie and Edward's Windsor engagement meant they were unable to join the pageant.

Prince Edward told crowds the Queen was "just taking the weight off her feet".

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie led a Big Lunch at Paddington's Recreation Ground where they tried their hand at spinning plates and bowls. It had been widely reported the Queen wanted to make a special effort for her granddaughters at this Jubilee and we've seen that with several individual engagements in the lead up to the Jubilee and today's special appearance.

85,000 Big Lunches, street parties and picnics took place all over the UK.

More from the Palace on the plans made in recent months:

'The Platinum Jubilee Pageant will have all the excitement and spectacle of an international parade and carnival – awe-inspiring and filled with marvel and delight. The Pageant will combine street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume to celebrate Her Majesty’s unwavering duty, love of the natural world and dedication to the Commonwealth.

The Platinum Jubilee Pageant is inviting children from across the UK to play a part in the ‘River of Hope’ procession. Forming an important part of the Pageant, the procession will comprise of two hundred silk flags which will process down The Mall, emulating a moving river. Primary and secondary school children are invited to create a picture of their hopes and aspirations for the planet over the next 70 years. A selection of these creations will be transferred on to silk flags, which will carried by secondary school pupils. The ‘River of Hope’ section is being choreographed by Kinetika Bloco with music by one hundred young players from London and Edinburgh.

The artwork for the flags will be focused on climate change and incorporates the children’s messages for the future. Teachers from applying schools will be provided with step-by-step guides to creating a beautiful digital artwork with their students, of which 200 will then be selected for the flags. The selected artwork will then also be shown up and down the country on screens as part of the Jubilee celebrations.'

The first part of the pageant included a military parade in honour of the Queen, with service personnel from across the UK and the Commonwealth.

A fascinating highlight was the Gold State Coach travelling with a hologram of the Queen.

'The 260-year-old carriage had taken her to and from her coronation in 1953.

Today the coach, flanked by guardsmen on horseback, featured archival footage of Her Majesty, making it seem as if she was inside.

The three-kilometre parade, led by the carriage, is divided into four acts, the first featuring a military procession.

The carnival procession began at the Palace of Westminster and went along Whitehall to Admiralty Arch and then down The Mall to the Queen Victoria Monument outside Buckingham Palace.

It then turned on to Birdcage Walk and along St James's Park.'

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh travelling in the coach on Coronation day, 1953. The Queen once revealed the coach is terribly uncomfortable, adding her Coronation journey in it was "horrible". With that in mind, the hologram was a rather genius idea by aides.

It hasn’t been seen on the streets of London since the Golden Jubilee in 2002.

Buckingham Palace said: "It has been significantly overhauled four times, in 1820 when King George IV acceded (but it was not used for his coronation); in 1902 for the coronation of King Edward VII, and in 1953 for the coronation of The Queen. It was last regilded in 1977 for The Queen’s Silver Jubilee, although in places it bears evidence of between seven and ten layers of gilding and retouching over the past 260 years. The Coach was used at the State Openings of Parliament, by George III, George IV and William IV. Queen Victoria, however, was not fond of the Coach and after Prince Albert’s death in 1861, only opened Parliament seven times and did not make use of the State Coach. King Edward VII revived its use at his Coronation and the annual State Opening of Parliament, and this was continued by King George V from 1922. King George VI made use of it twice following his coronation."

The second act of the pageant, 'The Time of Our Lives', showed the Queen's reign evolving over decades through fashion and music.

It was accompanied by a heartfelt statement from Her Majesty.

"When it comes to how to mark seventy years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first. But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee.

"While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.

"I have been inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship that has been so evident in recent days, and I hope this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for many years to come.

"I thank you most sincerely for your good wishes and for the part you have all played in these happy celebrations."

The Duchess looked lovely in a custom raspberry pink dress by Stella McCartney (with thanks to Middleton Maven). Kate wore the same shade to Eugenie's wedding; it suits her colouring beautifully. The elegant dress features draping and pleat detail, structured shoulders and a midi length.

Separately, a number of images have just surfaced on social media showing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier attending a Big Lunch in Kensington.

The Duke and Duchess spent time with locals celebrating this historic occasion.

Guests shared snaps from the party.

Buckingham Palace shared this video of glimpses from a life of service.

Thank you, Your Majesty, for a lifetime of service, dedication and duty. An unforgettable weekend marking a reign the likes of which we'll probably never see again.

More from the BBC:

'This was also, alongside the partying and pageantry, a farewell to the Queen who after seven decades is withdrawing from public life.'

"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong." -- Queen Elizabeth II.

It has been a joy to follow the celebrations with you all. Thank you for following on the blog!

Was a bit surprised we didn’t see more or the Sussex family. Did that surprise you too?

  4. What a celebration! I have to admit that seeing all these events and the Royals reaching out to the people in person has made me quite emotional. Kate baking with the kids was a highlight for me. I was thrilled to see the Queen in bright green today and looking well. Kate has done another day of perfection. She truly is a gem and has made such an effort to change up styles and colours all week. Gorgeous. The Cambridges (all 5 of them) must be tired and I do hope they’ve gone home to relax and have a piece of cake. A heartfelt thank you Charlotte for all your posts and updates.

  10. Charlotte, these 4 days have been amazing, as was your coverage. It looks like the Jubilee was a huge success, and I know many people will be getting some rest now. I somehow didn't realize the concert would be outdoors -- it was a beautiful event, including the night scenes. I couldn't find a good video of Adam Lambert and Queen until you posted one -- I have adored Lambert since he was an American Idol contestant in 2009. He has a fantastic voice with a wide range -- he's a powerhouse and a nice guy. I was struck by how extremely pretty Lady Louise looked, and such Fun Harry's cousins and their children were having, including little August (!). Ultimately it was a way to celebrate WITH the Queen, and she was really on her game at tea!

  11. Charlotte thank you so much! I loved all the pictures and commentary! On fashion: I love both dresses Kate wore today! With her figure, that Stella McCartney dress look fabulous on her with the balloon sleeves toward her wrists. Gorgeous! I thought her polka-dotted dress was so festive and fun!
Very sadly I say, Her Majesty looks unwell today. She looks thin and tired. I just love her so much and it pains me to see it. A wonderful long weekend! However long Her Majesty has on this Earth, it warms my heart she got to see this wonderful celebration in honor of her service and how much it meant to people.

Thank you for the stellar coverage, Charlotte!!! These past four days will be unforgettable for me, and following your blog made it such a joy! ♥️
I stand in awe of Her Majesty's life and service - what an inspiration for everyone who wants to do their best for those around them! One doesn't have to be a royal; the point is to be true to one's vocation, kind and interested in the others. It always gives me goosebumps to hear her "... my life, whether it be long or short...." - she couldn't have known she would once celebrate her Platinum Jubilee!!! - yet, she has kept her promise!

  13. Wow, what an incredible few days! I loved seeing the royals come together to celebrate the Queen and especially loved seeing so much of the children. I usually don't love all of Kate's outfits so many days in a row, but I truly loved every single thing she wore during the Jubilee, I thought she looked amazing. Also amazing that she seemed to be genuinely excited and engaged at every single event, despite how tiring it must have all been. Thank you for your very detailed coverage, Charlotte!

  14. Thank you for your hard work and speedy reporting. Amazed at what you’ve done over the four days, but I’m sure the background work started way before.
Love this outfit - both style and colour are amazing. Kate has been an absolute shining star throughout. She is such a calming force and a rock to the family.
When the Queen, at the tender age of 21 said “my whole life,” she truly meant it. She wasn’t born to sit on the throne, yet she took it on and made it her own. At the time she may never have realized that long would be this long. Yet she’s stood the test of times, and has been absolutely remarkable. God save the queen.

  15. This has been so lovely to follow along these past days. Thanks for providing those of us who are far flung to enjoy this rare time in history. I have been very impressed with how the Cambridge children have handled all this. Kudos to William and Catherine for obviously preparing them well.
As for the Queen. She has had her times of unpopularity. But I think we see that her method of staying calm and carrying on has stood her in good stead. Whether we think a monarchy is no longer needed or not. We all respect and admire the way she has filled her “calling.”

  17. So many beautiful dresses, one don't know where to look first. The Queen with the green coat and hat looked stunning. Little August is a real sweetie. Wow he is Jack in mini version, but the hair is from Sara's side. Little Wolfe was there to. I hope every one had a grand time. There was something for everyone.

  18. I admit I think the balcony looks rather empty with the slimmed down royal look.
Maybe they’ll have more people up there next time. Of course, as an American, I’m not the one paying for any of it either. Did anyone else notice someone is suddenly blacked out in the photos? Seems odd after they had already been released elsewhere. The Queen has certainly lived through some remarkable times. I imagine she doesn’t quite know what to do without Philip. My grandparents died last year (they were 105, 98) within a couple of weeks of each other.

    1. Just so you know: British taxpayers do not fund the monarchy. The Sovereign Grant represents a minority percentage of the Crown Estate income, of which the state gets the majority percentage. British taxpayers are actually receiving the better end of the deal.

The old "Civil List," created in a deal made with the state in the late 18th century, no longer exists, but even when it did, the state was better off than the royals were. It metamorphosed into the Sovereign Grant, which covers the monarchy's official expenses (staff, offices, etc.). Today, the Queen herself pays annuities (and even dress allowances) to those members of the royal family, except the Cambridges, who carry out royal engagements and so forth from her private Duchy of Lancaster income. The DoL has been an appurtenance of the monarch since the late 14th century but always held separately from the Crown.

The Cambridges' official expenses are covered by the Prince of Wales, out of his Cornwall income. The Duchy of Cornwall has been an appurtenance of the eldest son of the monarch since the early 14th century.

The main public expense of the monarchy is security coverage. It costs millions of pounds annually, but the Crown Estate income itself amounts to millions of pounds annually. The majority percentage of the CE income that that state gets helps compensate for that.

  19. Looks like a very good time was had by all, throughout the UK. The hologram in the state coach was certainly a clever touch. Kudos to whoever thought of it.

This was almost certainly the last great celebration of Elizabeth R II's reign, and the knowledge is bittersweet. On the one hand, the Queen's longevity and rock-solid steadfastness and stamina have been remarkable and so worth celebrating; on the other, the very fact of the celebration acknowledges that a long life is drawing to its inevitable close. She may well live to be 100, and a great national birthday party may take place, but Elizabeth may not be as present as she is now. This was the opportunity to make sure that she knows how much she is loved, and the British made the most of it.

We Americans don't want a monarchy -- it wouldn't suit our traditions or our polity -- but even for us, Elizabeth -- head of state in the two nations with which we enjoy our closest historical and diplomatic relationships -- has been a symbol of stability and continuity, the only British monarch that most of us remember, as our presidents and the British prime ministers have come and gone. For reasons that it would take too long to explain, my parents-in-law occupied VIP grandstand seats along the procession way to her coronation (it was cold and rained, they said), so even they, unabashedly pinko American liberals, always had a soft spot for Queen Elizabeth.

"Vivat Regina!" they would happily have cried, as the Queen appeared on the balcony, in her gorgeous apple-green ensemble. Great color.

Which brings us to clothes. I'll be quick. The puffed-sleeve gingham-check top doesn't do it for me, but it's cute, I suppose. (I have to admit that I generally use the word "cute" pejoratively, since I don't think anyone over the age of 6 should aspire to look "cute".) The Alessandra Rich isn't my style -- I prefer her tweed items -- but I know the Duchess likes her polka-dot, vintage-inspired dresses, and this one is better than one or two others she's worn. The blue shade is great.

The raspberry-pink McCartney dress is a fabulous color, one of my favorites, and it looks just terrific on the Duchess. I haven't had much luck with McCartney -- there have been quality issues -- but this dress is appealing. I might point out that the style of the dress isn't that unusual or difficult to find. I own a Cinq à Sept dress in silk, in a dark ashes-of-roses shade, that is very, very close in terms of design.

In closing I repeat: Vivat Regina.

  20. There are so many things I want to say! First of all, thank you for this community Charlotte. I know it is a lot of work. Thank you to Her Majesty for being an example, coming from an American. I look at people trying to take away the monarchy that already vote in their own government officials, and I wonder what good they think that will do! I look at ours and their elected officials and feel like it’s not that impressive! Good luck with that.

As for the working royals, kudos to their hard work this weekend and optimism. I’m sure it’s not easy knowing the Queen is getting older and transition will happen at some point! Thank you to the Cambridges for sharing their children at trooping, Wales and the concert.

For all the people who wanted to see the Cambridge children more and earlier, it is not easy doing your adult role in public and trying to manage your child at the same time. I’m an elementary school teacher of kids that are older than Louis, and you never know what you’ll get. Good for Will and Kate to let George and Charlotte be and grow up. I’m absolutely disgusted with Omid Scobie today. He acts like he’s a different kind of reporter focusing on truth and being kind like Harry & Meghan profess, but he retweeted a post (that’s since been deleted) with Louis misbehaving. The comments were awful and he basically is just baiting people. The Royal Family are all trying their best to raise children in this toxic environment of social media. He is no better than any of the other Royal Rota with that behavior. Harry and Meghan laid low to keep this weekend about the Queen and he just couldn’t help himself. Kids should be off limits. You try taking care of a barely 4 year old kid that is being filmed for 2+ hours.

There was a lot of hard work that went into this weekend, I am impressed! :) Sue

    5. Sue you said it very well and I share all of your sentiments! I share Anon 19:06's comment in that while the online comments are abhorrent, the Cambridges had a perfect response.....sometimes soft diplomacy works better on trolls who are only baiting for a response to further the negative narrative. The photos of the weekend are enough to show that it was a wonderful weekend.

    6. Agree, very clever response. Too bad people feel the need to criticise a small boy. Probably because that's the only thing they could find, the jubilee has been such a success.

    7. From another American, I completely agree with your comments. The royals were so brave to bring all of the young children to a 2.5 hour event. I loved Louis’ reactions. Especially his chat with the Queen on the balcony. Wonderful weekend, wonderful job Charlotte!

    8. Hi Sue, just read your comments again. Very well said I didn't realise that you were a teacher. 4 year old are a skit because you just don't know what they are going to say or do. Even The Duchess was laughing at him. I'd imagine The Queen saw it and laughed. My Parish Priest has been known to stop people leaving if their child is acting up or crying. Says all welcome here and they are just being God's children. I think a grown man coming for a 4 year old child speaks for itself. It was a fantastic weekend enjoyed by most, obviously not everyone is happy. S. ☺

    1. It's an oversized hat pin. I was really puzzled by it for quite some time, as I thought it looked out of place and very unlike Her Majesty. 29. Wow! As an American, I'm sure I spent just as many hours fixated on the Platinum Jubilee as a Brit. This is not something most of us will ever experience again. Charlotte, congratulations! Well done! In many ways the work you put in was on par with a Royal Tour. The big difference is that this was about celebrating HM and her reign AND family. As each day progressed and we saw the Cambridge children and less of HM, in my heart I could feel the shift. Very exciting and yet poignant at the same time.

Kate's style selections (and honestly most of the other women as well) were perfection:
McQueen 'rewear' with a new (and very stylish hat) and featuring Diana's earrings & necklace
New Emilia Wickstead and stunning hat (would have loved to see a brooch)
Eponine coat 'rewear' which looked great with the navy dress and accessories
Self Portrait 'rewear' was lovely for the concert (and glamorous hair after a day in a pony tail)
The Alessandra Rich Blue Cyan dress I hope she wears again soon. It's a 'Kate" dress!
Stella McCarthy Dark Fushia dress was so lovely - I would have loved to see the length
Put simply, Kate looks good and can wear just about anything!

Seeing the entire family with their kids was incredibly special at the concert and the final parade. One can only wonder what the next family holiday will be like. As trying as it must have been for HM when her children's family's were coming apart, to be part of watching the grandchildren marry and start their families must give her peace of mind.

And while HM was missed, she was still there in many ways - that video to kick off the concert was darling. And I loved the hologram of HM in the golden coach. The light show on Buckingham Palace was spectacular - especially the David Attenborough portion.

And yes, we all saw Prince Louis doing his best on the balcony and during the parade but when he was standing next to his mummy during the parade and just kept hugging her - all I could think was 'wow, that's a Diana' moment. And so cute that he went and sat on his grandfather's lap as well.

One question, HM I thought looked good in her green outfit - yes, she's losing weight - but why was there a black ball on her hat? It just looked out of place - am I the only one thinking that?

Loved it all! So happy to see a country celebrate their Queen.

  32. Thank you, Charlotte for the great coverage! When I missed a comment or photo, I knew you would have it covered.
I found the BBC comment sobering and sad after a weekend of seeing all the celebrations. It was a bit of a farewell to a remarkable monarch as she lessens her public appearances.

  34. I didn't know there was negative feedback on little Louis! I thought he was just keeping it real. :) Seriously, he's a 4-year-old.

    1. Absolutely. No wonder they keep the children out of the public as far as possible.

    2. Also, those critics forget how he perfectly sang the national anthem, how he bowed his head at the right time, how he stood still on the balcony. Not bad for a little boy.

  35. Charlotte, you're simply the best at all this. Thank you.

  37. I wondered about the Queen's black ball also but decided it was a hat pin. If you look closely you can just see the "stick" part going in on the right of the green knot and coming back out on the left. Also the Daily Mail has a nice article about the earrings. They were a gift to the Queen from her parents and match a brooch she wore recently to the Chelsea Flower Show. Kate seems to have worn both at a 2018 Commonwealth Service.

  38. There is so much to comment on. A wonderful jubilee, well deserved for an unique Queen.
The best was to see the children. The Cambridge have built a charming family, happy and caring. Very uplifting. And the children are so well-behaved. Truly admirable. Best moment was the glance George gave the Queen on the balcony at the end of the national anthem. So proud and loving. Very sweet

I agree, Natacha! I loved that glance too 😍 I know George is not 9 yet but I think it's very important for him to see/hear/experience how the people love HM. He isn't going to forget this.

    2. I agree Natacha and Zora! The children were truly one of the highlights for me as well, it was inspiring and filled me with much hope. The glance at the end of the national anthem was a perfect note to end the Jubilee on! Such a beautiful display of pride and love and something he will never forget! Touching celebration and living tribute!

  40. Dear Charlotte,
Thank you for all this fantastic coverage.
I loved all the outfits from every member of the family.

I do hope they took a picture of the Queen with all the great grand kids as they were all on the same continent. How sad that we didn’t see the Californian little ones interact with their cousins.

  41. I forgot to add, the daily Mail has an article on Catherines’s flower earrings. They are borrowed from the Queen and match one of her brooches she wore not too long ago.

  42. Does anyone know what type of stove/cook range is in the Duchess’s kitchen? Love seeing a glimpse of her interior design.

  43. Hi Charlotte, I'm just wondering have you any information on the plans for Prince Williams birthday in two weeks. I did read somewhere that The Queen was planning a party for him. I also read that it would be a joint 40th for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I hope you have had a chance to take a break after such a long weekend and all your fantastic coverage. S. ☺

  44. The Queen was perfect, as always. I hope she will carry the evident love and respect of this Jubilee as the final public trophy of a life of service.
Love Catherine’s raspberry dress and congratulations to her for these days of hard work without a misstep. She’s the consummate professional while showing her natural side with her beautiful children. What a challenge that must have been.

  45. How wonderful to see the interaction between all the cousins, it is clear they get along well and must get together outside of royal functions. I get the distinct feeling that Charlotte and George will have a similar relationship that Charles and Anne have when they are older. They seem very close as siblings.

  46. Thank you Charlotte for all your work over the weekend it's been fabulous content.

Kate has looked stunning all weekend I have liked all her choices, I especially liked the Self Portrait dress she wore for the concert.
It is lovely to now see the children in public more now they are older. I thought Louis was gorgeous and I'm glad he enjoyed all the excitement as we have too!

Her Majesty obviously has a great sense of humour I just loved the skit with Paddington Bear. She is sadly getting frailer and I'm happy that we got to see her at at the 2 appearances she made.
The other Royal ladies all looked fabulous over the weekend I really liked Zara's dress she wore at the concert and photos of Crown Princess Mary published over the weekend she is wearing the same dress, I think it could be Zimmermann it looks like one of their designs.
So sweet how Beatrice spoke to the lady at the jubilee lunch who didn't know who she was and lovely to see sweet August I can see both Eugenie and Jack in him.

All in all a fabulous weekend celebrating Her Majesty The Queen.

Hi Charlotte, I tried 3 separate times to post a comment thanking you for your blogs and the wonderful research and history you include with each one. Each of my previous 3 attempts received an error message so hopefully this shorter message will make it thru the gateway.

PS, three times trying to post this one too with three errors

  48. Completely unrelated but the Spanish government has protested to the UK over the Earl and Countess's visit to Gibraltar.

    1. I can assure you that not even the ambassador was contacted and nobody in Spain is talking about this visit, it hasn’t been in the news. Spain always complains about these visits, it’s routine already.

  49. Great to have seen so many members of the family there and so many children. Little Louis won't get sweets for a month, I think all the siting still was to much for such a little guy. We finally seen little August well he is a mini version of daddy Jack, cute and red hair like mom. Also nice to see Wolfe there as well. Now we still need to see little Sienna, maybe on her 1st Birthday. I hope the Queen feels better again.

I've been a little slow getting through all your wonderful content, Charlotte, but I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all your hard work this weekend. Your coverage has been truly exceptional. I've particularly enjoyed seeing all the royal cousins out and about over the weekend - Zara and Beatrice have both been stand outs for me fashion wise this week.

The comment from the BBC about this weekend also being a farewell to Her Majesty really struck a chord with me. I have felt these events were bittersweet knowing there was unlikely to be anything like them again, and I was very touched by the thought that the Queen is still here to see such an outpouring of love and gratitude.

Also, how wonderful that the Cambridge's shared so much of their gorgeous family with us this weekend. I know it can't be easy but it was very special that the children could be involved. Little Louis has won a lot of hearts!

  53. What a magnificent celebration of Her Majesty. Elizabeth II has devoted her life to the UK, and its citizens. She has been unwavering in her devotion, and for much of the world, a constant presence. It was wonderful to follow along on this blog. I wanted to comment more often, but it is difficult now, to publish said comments. Thanks to Charlotte, who always has done such a remarkable, and wonderful job, bringing all of the events, up close and personal to us.

The Cambridge family was glorious the entire four days. Kate looked ravishingly beautiful, what a Queen she will be someday. Not only did she bring elegance, but a charming demeanor as well. The children were darling, William and Kate must be so proud of them.
It was a treasure trove of memories.

    Thank you,
    Tedi Godard
