First Look: The Princess of Wales Sparkles in Strathmore Rose Tiara

The Prince and Princess of Wales have arrived at Buckingham Palace for tonight's state banquet. TIARA ALERT!!! Kate is wearing the stunning Strathmore Rose tiara for the first time.

The Strathmore Rose Tiara was worn by the Queen Mother, who received it as a gift from her father for her wedding in 1923.

The diamond tiara features a garland of roses mounted in silver and gold. It's a beautiful, yet understated tiara, which hasn't been publicly worn for decades. It's been one on my wish list for Kate for over a decade.

**I'll have a full post shortly**

  1. God I love her in a tiara! Love this one on the Queen Mother as a young woman it is exquisite and not overpowering. Thank you Charlotte

  3. Thanks Charlotte, I've been trying to find that picture of the tiara..it's a beauty piece of jewelry. Look at those old diamonds. I just saw them walking in and it is a sparkler in motion. The Queen looks fantastic in the crown ruby necklace and the late Queens ruby tiara. Again looking at some of the jewels she has worn since becoming Queen, I really think they have been sent out to be professionally cleaned for the first time in years. Looking forward to your update Charlotte, you always choose the best pictures. S.🙂.

  4. I screamed when I saw this and startled my husband and cats! I'm so thrilled she's wearing the Strathmore Rose after decades of not seeing it worn. And I think the embroidery on her gown matches the tiara. Definitely a great fashion moment! Side note- Is anyone else wondering when/if the royal ladies will be given Charles' family order? I'm sure it takes time for new orders to be constructed.

    1. I'm sure they will have them, but it could be they're waiting a while. It will be a controversial addition to the royal ladies' jewelry boxes due to the cost.

  5. oh no, I just posted how impressed I was with Catherine's outfit this morning, but I don't like the evening outfit. The tiara is fantastic, the dress is beautiful and it fits perfectly but the gloves don't look good on her in my opinion. I think the dress would have been better with longer sleeves. somehow I find the gloves strange and old-fashioned

    1. I thought the same until someone corrected me. Gloves are high fashion at the moment. I just wished she had stacked a few diamond bracelets on. S.🙂.

    2. I love the gloves! Much better styled than her last attempt with the black gloves that were too long gor me - but even then, the young set raved about them. Only old-fashioned if you remember your mother wearing them!
Love that she's wearing the Strathmore Rose and I like the fit and flare of her gown. Time to wear a colour other than white though - except she was probably defering to Camilla in red.

    3. Funny I felt the opposite. Red cape was ill fitting, too much fabric for her slim frame. I think she looks great tonight!

    4. Trickymum, it appears that both Anne and Sophie also wore white so there may have been some coordination there.

    5. I agree about the red outfit, too much fabric. I love the gown and tiera! It looks to me that the embroidery on the dress match the tiera! Gorgeous!!

  9. Looks beautiful. Was always hoping someone would wear it. It seems right up Kate's alley as the old saying goes.

  10. That looks like the white dress from the South Africa State visit but with different sleeves and embellishments, Caro

    1. I think the skirt is swishier this time - that was more slender, to accommodate the caped sleeves. That dress, this one and her Coronation gown(s) are all quite similar. Time for a different colour at least. She could have swapped with Camilla - they wore red and blue this morning, so could have worn blue and red this evening!

    2. I was thinking the same thing and comparing it to Charlotte's post from last year, it sure looks like it's a modified version. Kudos to her and Jenny Packham! That tiara is just gorgeous on her! And the Burmese Ruby.....who knew that having a new wearer with a totally different hairstyle would make me actually like it. lol! Camilla looks lovely tonight in red.

    3. I totally agree about the Burmese tiara. I've never been a fan when QEII wore it, but it definitely looks great in Cam's feathery locks with the red dress.

    4. Sophie and Anne were also wearing white so it was definitely a choice made by Charles or Camilla.

  14. I prefer tiaras like this, where you can easily see the design. I like that the dress is relatively simple, to not conflict with the tiara. I like the sleeves, although the dress seems familiar -- perhaps I'm thinking of a previous dress worn by Kate or Meghan. I also think it would look much better without gloves, which are competing with the sleeve edges. Overall, though, a great look!

  15. I love this first look though I’m a little unsure about the gloves.

I think we’ll need to rely on Kate for new tiaras and jewels - I don’t think Camila will go for many “new” pieces and will stick to tiaras worn by herself or by Queen Elizabeth. I hope I’m wrong and we see more and more from the vault - so many beautiful pieces that deserve to be seen.

  16. I have wanted to see that tiara for so long. It is gorgeous! Kate looks spectacular.

  17. Duchess of Gloucester for the win from me. She looks sensational and yet simple and not trying to take the limelight. Can you guess I am a huge fan of hers!! I wish Kate had worn a repeat - CP Mary manages to rework dresses without the expense of a dress that will only be worn once, but still has a tweak to make it look a little different. I love the way the Queen Mum wore the tiara. LRB

  18. She looks beautiful but I’m not a fan of those squared off shoulders. Are huge shoulder pads back in fashion??

    1. Many 80's fashions are coming around again. I just bought a sweater, colorblocked in black and grey which I think is identical to one I had in 1987. A very odd feeling!

I love the Jenny Packham gown for the last state visit and prefer it to this gown. Or maybe the hair is too severe?
